Picking Brocade from the Discourses on Painting
Our concept of history in art is too limited; thus, we cannot discover the future from past experiences.
Western landscape painting focuses on objective representation, while Eastern landscape painting emphasizes the impressionistic recreation.
Western art centers around imitation of nature, often leaning towards realism. As a result, it tends to be more objective. On the other hand, Eastern art focuses on imaginative representation, leaning towards expressionism and a more subjective approach.
Eastern art leans towards the subjective, but due to underdeveloped forms, it may not fully express emotional needs. Western art leans towards the objective, but because of excessive formal development, it may lack emotional expression, often becoming mechanical and stereotypical. If these aspects can be harmonized, complementing each other, the emergence of a new art is possible in the present.
Art is a product of emotion, and it is through art that emotions find solace.
Leo Tolstoy said, "People use language to convey their thoughts to one another, and they use art to convey their emotions to one another."
